October 2013 marks the 10th anniversary of National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Created through a partnership between the National Cyber Security Division (NCSD) within the Department of Homeland Security and a non-profit organization known as the National Cyber Security Alliance, this month-long campaign serves as an opportunity for private citizens and businesses both large and small to learn about all the ways to protect themselves for threats in the online realm. With each person on the planet living increasingly connected lives, the need to protect ourselves and our personal information from digital attacks is greater than ever. Protecting critical infrastructure (such as power plants, hospitals, and even servers) from malicious online actors is essential as well – breaches of cyber security in these instances can potentially be a matter of life and death.
Shared Responsibility is the theme for this edition of Cyber Security Awareness Month. The dispersed nature of the Internet means that no one party can shoulder the burden of cyber security. Entities that might not otherwise have any interaction must boldly forge partnerships to ensure their mutual protection. Commercial banks must work with federal law enforcement agencies to halt online financial fraud, while at the same time intelligence agencies must extend their umbrella of cyber protection to a range of businesses across the country and even around the world. Although new territory for many organizations, collaborations like this will ultimately make everyone safer online.
At Praescient, we seek to foster these important collaborations by putting smart analysts in front the latest technology. With the right tools and the proper knowledge, we can help both the private industry and the federal government to stay on top of any cyber threat. Below, find a video that demonstrates how our analysts identify and respond to a cyber attacks. Using network data from the excellent Honeynet Project, our analyst can easily understand when and where attempted attacks originate. As Cyber Security Awareness Month continues, be sure to stay vigilant online and embrace cyber security best practices. Finally, get in touch with Praescient today if you’re ready to apply the power of analytics to the defense of your critical online infrastructure.
